Letting your professor know what is going on is so important as the earlier they know about a situation, obstacle, or emergency the better they can assist you. Sometimes it can be intimidating can reach out to a professor and share what is going; however, if you don't reach out and ask, then you'll never know!

Another tip for communicating with professors is to think through a potential solution and mention that to the professor. For example, if you went to the ER for an emergency and needed some more time to submit an assignment. You would share with the professor when you were in the ER, request more time for the assignment ("Would it be possible for me to submit the assignment to you by _____?"), and discuss what you have completed ("I have already complete the first two parts of the paper so I know I can complete the remaining two parts by _____.").

The Ombudsman Office is an informal, impartial, independent, neutral and confidential place for community members to address concerns. This office works to provide informal assistance to resolve differences and help build mutual understanding. The University is committed to providing its community with an outlet for informally raising and addressing concerns in a confidential, independent, safe, supportive, respectful and neutral environment.

The purpose of the Ombudsman Office is to ensure that everyone at National University is heard and given the proper respect and support in handling grievances.

Faculty, students, and staff are welcome and encouraged to contact the university Ombudsman for unbiased assistance and guidance in resolving any complaints or concerns.

Miscommunication between supervisors, coworkers, employees, and/or students

Confusion around policies and/or procedures

Ethical and unfair treatment concerns

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) serves the National University community by advocating for accepted norms of fairness, decency and ethical behavior, adherence to the letter and spirit of National University policies, and prevention of delay, complication, and unresponsiveness in the application of University rules and processes.

National Conflict Resource Center's mission is to resolve issues with the highest possible degree of civility and equitability to all parties involved. They have a Community Mediation services option available for situations occurring in San Diego County.
